◇ The maison

We operate nineteen journeys a year, and decline roughly three hundred.

Mandarin Noir is a small house in Toronto and Hong Kong arranging private encounters with a country that, for most, remains behind glass. We do not publish a catalogue. We do not advertise a price. We correspond.

§ I — on restraint

◇ From the directeur

Hana Cheng

Directeur · Toronto

“We read each letter we are sent. We decline roughly one in three, with care and without offence. What remains — what we accept — we commit to, fully, from the hour we agree a date to the car that brings you home from Pearson.”

§ The brief

Black, brushed gold, ink-wash texture. The hero plays a slow video of mist over the Li River; the page reveals like a fashion lookbook.

01

Refusal as a design primitive

A luxury house sells what it won't do. The homepage declines a visible price, declines a booking button, declines a catalogue. What remains — correspondence — is what the brand wants to sell.

02

Cinema on first touch

A cinematic cross-fade carousel with vertical thumbnails, desaturated imagery and a floating Roman numeral replaces the flat hero photo. The first ten seconds read as a film title sequence, not a web page.

03

Cards as plates

The lookbook cards have no price, no star rating, no reviews. They carry a plate number, an italic title, a sommelier-style inclusions list and a single detail photograph. The aesthetic refuses the marketplace.

04

A voice, not a tagline

Every line of copy is written as if by a maître d'. 'We correspond.' 'We decline roughly three hundred.' 'We are quite easy to reach.' Specific enough to feel real, restrained enough to feel earned.
